BioWare has announced Mass Effect Legendary Edition. It is a remaster of Mass Effect Trilogy, or the first three parts of the sci-fi RPG. The studio is also working on a new game in the Mass Effect series, but nothing is known about this yet.
BioWare does not yet show gameplay footage of the Mass Effect remasters, but does show a short teaser video. In the announcement the studio writes that it has been working for months to update textures, shaders, models, effects and other technical features from the first three games in the series. That work should result in remasters of Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 and the associated dlc.
The revamped games will be released as één bundle, under the name Mass Effect Legendary Edition. BioWare does not yet mention an exact release date, the bundle is due in the spring of 2021. The remasters come to PC and PlayStation and Xbox consoles. For Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, BioWare promises improvements, but details aren’t yet available to the studio.
BioWare stresses that it is not a remake of the games, but polished remasters, who remain true to the original games. “It wasn’t our goal to recreate the original games, but to modernize them so that fans and new players can experience the original work in the best possible shape,” the developers.
Pc gamers can already graphically polish the existing Mass Effect games with community-created mods. For example, there is the mod A Lot Of Textures, or Alot, for the three games. That mod contains high-resolution textures, increasing image quality. The extent to which BioWare’s remasters are improving is not yet known.
Also, BioWare reports that a team of veterans is working a new chapter in the Mass Effect universe. That project is still in its early stages and the studio doesn’t want to comment further. BioWare has previously hinted at work on a new Mass Effect game.
The first Mass Effect game was released in 2007. Mass Effect 2 followed in 2010 and mass effect 3 was published in 2012. The three sci-fi RPGs were rated by both reviewers and high-rated players. In 2017, another sequel was released in the form of Mass Effect: Andromeda, but both technically and in terms of gameplay, that game disappointed many.
