Sundar Pichai Explains to Congress Why Searching for ‘Idiot’ Shows Donald Trump

Sundar Pichai

During a hearing in front of House Judiciary Committee, Sundar Pichai was asked, why the picture of Donald Trump appears in the search results of the term “Idiot” and Google’s CEO had to explain why searching for ‘Idiot’ Shows Donald Trump

In the hearing on Tuesday named “Transparency & Accountability: Examining Google and its Data Collection, Use, and Filtering Practices”, Google’s CEO had to face a very odd question. Democratic Representative Zoe Lofgren asked Pichai that when she searches for the term “Idiot” on Google, the picture of Donald Trump appears in the images. Why does that happen? Pichai then explained that the results are based on 200 signals and are not manually intervened. He said that the search term is matched on billions of web pages before the results are shown. There are also some more factors that affect the search results. No manual person can interfere with the search results.

“We provide search today for any time you type in a keyword. We, as Google, have gone out and crawled and stored copies of billions of their pages in our index, and we take the keyword and match it against the pages and rank them based on over 200 signals,” Pichai said.

“Things like relevance, freshness, popularity, how other people are using it. And based on that, you know, at any given time, we try to find the best results for that query,” he added.

For the record, it is not a coincidence that Idiot term shows Trump. This was a result of a campaign by Reddit users to manipulate Google’s Algorithm into doing it. This is not a new incident and something similar has happened before with the former U.S president. In the mid-2000s, President George W. Bush photo showed up whenever you searched for “miserable failure.”
